Forms of Financial Aid
Before you start looking at financial aid options for you PhD program, it is important to understand the differences between each option. Scholarships and grants are two popular options, and through competition for these funds are high in most cases, the benefit is that do not need to be repaid when you graduate, as is the case with student loans. Scholarships are given based on merit while grants are given based on need, though other criteria apply to both types, depending on the specific program. At the PhD level, fellowships are more common than scholarships; essentially, they are the same thing, except scholarships are usually just awarded outright while most fellowships come attached to added responsibilities, such as becoming a teaching assistant at your college. Also at the PhD level, grants can be awarded to pay for tuition but are more commonly available to fund specific research projects that you want to complete while in school. Outside of scholarships, grants, and loans, you may also have access to tuition reimbursement programs through you employer. With this type of fun, your employer will cover the costs of your education, but you may have to commit to working in a certain job for a period of time in exchange for a free education.
