Logistics has become a very hot topic in the business world. This is, in part, because logistics is viewed as an area where a lot of money can be saved through innovation, cost saving measures and new technology.

However, as much as companies want to save money through improved logistic plans, there are times when they can make no compromises. Products, especially when fragile or perishable, must get where they need to be on time and intact.

This combination of need for continuous improvement in efficiency while not compromising quality in shipping has led to a tremendous demand for logistics experts who can deliver the goods… literally. If you’re pursuing this important field, you’re sure to find that there are lots of job opportunities and lots of new companies coming into the marketplace who will be working to bring their customers the best in logistics services.

In logistics, there are many issues that are dealt with like what and where and when the materials would be supplied during operations without many disruptions. It is indeed is very difficult to manage logistic chain during an operation in logistics. So as a manager in logistics, it becomes very important for a person to be sharp and wise enough to carry out company logistics in an effective and cardinal manner. Following methods can be adopted by a company to improve overall logistics during 5 minutes a day.

Planning ahead of the schedule is sign of an efficient logistics plan. And that plan should be foolproof hardly with a minimum chance of failure and without a breakdown in the chain, though there are extenuating circumstances. So a good logistics manager knows how to plan well without having and showcasing delay in the supply chain.

The next important thing at day to day logistic planning is without being going to be overconfident. Though the plan may be foolproof, logistics managers know that they never be overconfident that everything would work properly and would end at the right order and place. They know it is foolish to only depend upon only a single supplier or vendor, therefore they develops relation with a good number of broad network of sources for the product and services as required by them.

The next principle to improved supply chain is keeping a cool head in the face of a disaster as a manager is wishing to improve their logistics management skills. In case you go into panic in logistic management then situations even can go worse and over performed. So you always should be prepared with ready arguments and ideas on demand face any eventuality otherwise entire operation can end up into shambles.

Next important thing to improve over and cultivating relations in supply chain is to develop strong relationship along and around the supply chain. The performing operation happen to be weakest link in a supply chain therefore a good manager should cultivate better and honest relationships with their suppliers and vendors so the entire operations should be carried out in an effective and rational manner. They even know that a bad relationship can sour the entire supply chain and can cause failure.

Another one important aspect to supply chain is learning from mistakes and that too is quite natural to even make mistake in a supply chain. Use those mistakes to be stepping stone for your success during the supply chain management. Integrating overseas suppliers creates a consistent and predictable import process. Web-based suppliers portals help automate tactical purchasing efforts, eliminating the need to re-key data.

Supply Chain Management (SCM) is known to be the management of network of interconnected businesses including processes required for product and service packaging to be used and employed by an end user. Supply Chain Management spreads over all movement and storage of raw materials, work-in-process inventory, and finished goods from the place of origin to finally they are consumed. Whereas, Logistics is the systematic arrangement of the flow of goods, information and other resources between the point of origin and the point of consumption to meet out the needs of the consumers.

Logistics includes the integration of information, transportation, inventory, warehousing, material-handling, and packaging, and occasionally security. Logistics is known to be a channel of the supply chain that adds the value of time and place utility. Now-a-day complexity of production logistics can be modeled, analyzed, visualized and optimized by plant simulation software. Logistics management in itself is a part of the supply chain that plans, implements and controls the efficient, effective forward and reverse flow of storage of goods, services and related information between the point of origin and the point of consummation in order to meet out customer and legal needs.

When the objectives of a supply chain are ascertained they includes objectives like enhancing customer service, expanding sales revenue, reducing inventory cost, improving on-time delivery, reducing order to delivery cycle time, reducing lead time, reducing transportation cost, reducing warehouse cost, reducing / rationalize supplier base, expanding width and depth of distribution.

If the objectives of logistic management are looked into they consist of the management of physical material flow processes and the information flows that influence over again those procedures. The main objectives there are understood as transportation policies, transportation routing and scheduling, shipment preparation, warehousing/distribution center scheduling, design and mapping, inbound/outbound design and mapping, material handling procedures including picking, packaging, deconsolidation and reconsolidation methods, as well as maintenance, labor and indirect material needs. However, with the cost prospective logistic management take care of entire cost mechanism.

However, despite all this discussion Supply Chain Management holds a superior position over logistic management with respect to the flow and design of physical material flow as process and many a time avoided by logistics. Supply chain management studies entire system and organization of material information and financial flows. Supply Chain Management credibly considers the entire system of processes that regulate material, information and financial flows looking at each process as a complete architecture.

A PhD in logistics is a comprehensive and extensive program whose primary focus is the operations and maintenance of supply chain management as well as transportation and other aspects of this industry. Student s who undertake the PhD in Logistics programs are exposed to a wide and in depth study, research the development, theories, themes and strategies that are involved in the practical field of supply chain management and logistics modeling. Other primary areas of focus include the operations involved in supply chain management and transportation. In the course of the program and upon completion of this Doctoral degree students gain critical skills in purchasing, forecasting, inventory and assembly. Skills that serve as a platform in providing students with an understanding of supply chain relationships as well as the management of demand on this supply chain.
Candidates who take up PhD in Logistics will gain skills and competencies in empirical and analytical methods Students will learn to utilize their expertise in a professional setting. Most of the programs are taken by full time students who are expected to dedicate their time and resources to research and development that is accompanied by technology intensive methods of learning.

These programs are characterized by methods of learning that are largely focused on tasks of researching, writing and editing of the dissertation; tasks that may take a long time to complete and thus a PhD student undertaking a program in Logistics is mostly occupied with the completion of the comprehensive dissertation which is presented and defended in the presence of a panel which has the mandate to determine if the candidate has met the fundamental requirements and is thus suitable to graduate. Core areas of study under a PhD in Logistics program include:
•	Transportation economics
•	Supply chain technology
•	Modeling logistics
•	Methods of statistical research
•	Logistical systems

Most of the PhD in Logistics programs are very much sought after and are some of the most competitive in terms of the requirements for admission. This is especially true for those who are seeking to get admission in some of the top schools and PhD programs in the country. Most of these programs require that the applying candidate to have at least a bachelor’s degree with very high credentials that are recognized in the country and by the admitting institution. Most programs also require that the applying candidate have a master’s degree in a field that is relevant or related to the PhD in Logistics programs that that they plan to undertake. However some institutions of higher education offer programs in which a candidate may pursue their Master’s while pursuing their PhD program. In addition to these requirements, a candidate must show GMAT scores that are strong as well as relevant work experience.
